The report is based on a survey of 31,000 people across 31 countries, as well as data from Microsoft 365 and research from Fortune 500 companies. It specifically looks at the impact of generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, which have become available in the workplace since late 2022. While there were initial concerns that AI would replace jobs, the report indicates a different narrative – overburdened workers are turning to AI for relief and managers are seeking individuals with AI skills.
The report highlights the challenges faced by workers in a digital age. Nearly 70% of those surveyed admitted to struggling with the pace and volume of their work, with almost half experiencing feelings of burnout. Microsoft 365 users spend a significant portion of their workday on communication tasks within the company, rather than on core work in programs like Word and PowerPoint. This shift in work patterns has led to increased interest in AI tools to streamline processes.
Interestingly, the report reveals that 46% of workers are considering quitting their current jobs this year. However, having AI skills may become crucial for securing new employment opportunities. HR experts emphasize the importance of developing AI competencies, as hiring managers are increasingly valuing candidates with AI experience. The trend towards AI integration is inevitable, and organizations are recognizing the need to adapt to this new reality.
Although AI usage is growing rapidly among office workers, the overall adoption rate may be slower than expected. A Pew survey earlier this year indicated that only 20% of US adults have utilized AI tools like ChatGPT for work. Despite advancements in AI capabilities, there is still a learning curve for many individuals in incorporating these tools into their workflow. Moreover, the potential benefits of AI, such as the rewrite feature and personalized reminders, are yet to be fully realized by all users.
