SpaceX Expands Starlink Service to Backpackers with Mini Kit

SpaceX has recently announced the expansion of its Starlink internet service to cater to backpackers with the introduction of the Starlink Mini kit. This new compact DC-powered kit is about the size of a thick laptop and seamlessly integrates the Wi-Fi router right inside the dish. Despite its smaller size and lower power consumption than other Starlink terminals, the Mini kit is capable of delivering speeds over 100Mbps. According to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, this product has the to “change the world” and can be set up in less than five minutes.

One of the key highlights of the Starlink Mini kit is its low power consumption, averaging just 20-40W. This is a significant improvement compared to the 33-62W measured with a Standard Actuated dish and separate AC-powered Wi-Fi router just two years ago. The Mini kit can be powered for two to three hours using an Anker Prime 27,650mAh power bank, making it highly portable and suitable for use in remote locations or while on the move. It requires a USB-C PD power source with a minimum rating of 100W (20V/5A).

Compact Design and Durability

Measuring at 11.75 x 10.2 x 1.45 inches and weighing just 2.43 pounds (1.1kg), the Mini dish is designed to be compact and lightweight, making it easy to transport during travel. The kit also includes a 49.2 foot (15m) DC power cable and kickstand, bringing the total weight to 3.37 pounds (1.53kg). With an IP67 rating, the Mini dish is protected from dust and rain, including short periods of water immersion, ensuring its durability in various environments.

Pricing and Availability

In the US, the Starlink Mini kit is available as an add-on to Residential plans for $599, which is $100 more than the standard dish. Additionally, users can opt for the Mini Roam service at an extra cost of $30 per month on top of the existing $120 Residential plan, offering up to 50GB of mobile data each month. Users also have the option to purchase additional data for $1 per GB, as indicated in early-access invitations sent to some existing US Starlink customers.

While the Starlink Mini kit is new to the US, it has already been introduced in countries such as Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Panama. In these regions, users can access the Mini kit with Mini Service or Mobile – Regional Service plans, with no data or speed caps imposed. However, in-motion and ocean use is currently prohibited. SpaceX aims to expand the availability of the Mini kit to more markets over time, with the goal of reducing the cost of connectivity for individuals in regions where access to affordable or reliable internet has been limited.

The introduction of the Starlink Mini kit marks a significant milestone in SpaceX’s mission to provide global internet coverage. With its compact design, low power consumption, and portable nature, the Mini kit offers a convenient and efficient solution for backpackers and remote travelers seeking reliable connectivity on the go. As SpaceX continues to expand its and reach new markets, the Mini kit represents a step towards bridging the digital divide and making internet access more accessible worldwide.
