Approximately 7,200 workers at Daimler Truck facilities in three southern US states are facing the possibility of a strike as labor contract talks are coming to a close. Key Demands

President of the UAW, Shawn Fain, has made it clear that a strike will occur if the key demands of the workers are not met. Fain has criticized Chairman Martin Daum for prioritizing executive pay and shareholder payouts over fair compensation for the employees. The UAW is determined not to accept concessions and aims to raise standards for all workers.

Workers, such as forklift driver Jon Greene at the Cleveland, North Carolina plant, are focused on securing a livable wage increase to combat inflation. Job security and equal pay across all six facilities are also at the top of the employees’ list of priorities. Greene, who has been with the company for 22 years, emphasized that while no one wants to strike, they are willing to do so if necessary.

A spokesperson for Daimler Truck mentioned that the company is currently involved in negotiations in good faith and aims to reach an agreement that benefits all parties involved. Daimler Truck was separated from Mercedes-Benz in December 2021, with Mercedes-Benz maintaining a 30 percent stake in the truck company. The UAW is also looking to expand its reach by including a Mercedes-Benz car plant in Alabama in its network through an upcoming unionization vote. This expansion comes after a successful unionization drive at Volkswagen’s Tennessee factory.
