The Dataset Providers Alliance, a newly formed trade group comprising seven AI licensing companies, is leading the charge for standardized and fair practices in the AI industry. This alliance, which includes players like Rightsify, Pixta, and Calliope Networks, is advocating for an opt-in system where data can only be used with explicit consent from creators and rights holders.
The move towards an opt-in system is seen as a more ethical approach compared to the prevalent opt-out models that put the onus on data owners to request removal. According to Alex Bestall, CEO of Rightsify, opting in is not only morally sound but also a pragmatic way to avoid legal repercussions. Ed Newton-Rex from Fairly Trained concurs, stating that opt-outs can be unfair to creators who may not even be aware of their options.
While the DPA’s push for ethical data sourcing is commendable, there are concerns about the feasibility of the opt-in standard, especially given the vast amount of data required by modern AI models. Shayne Longpre of the Data Provenance Initiative highlights the potential challenges, indicating that only major tech companies may have the resources to comply with such stringent standards.
The DPA is staunchly against government-mandated licensing and instead advocates for a free-market system where data originators and AI companies can negotiate directly. The alliance also proposes various compensation models to ensure creators and rights holders are fairly remunerated for their data, including subscription-based, usage-based, and outcome-based licensing structures.
