Instagram is currently testing a new way for users to upload media on the platform. This pilot experiment, revealed by company head Adam Mosseri, allows select users to upload photos and videos in a vertical grid format without the need to crop the content into a square. Mosseri explained that the square format was a remnant of previous years when Instagram only allowed content to be posted in that specific format. However, the majority of content uploaded on Instagram today is vertical, with users preferring a 4:3 aspect ratio for photos and 9:16 for videos. The process of cropping this content into a square format was described as “brutal” by Mosseri, especially for users who put effort into ensuring that everything lines up seamlessly.
The potential impact of this change on users who meticulously curate their content before posting was acknowledged by Mosseri, who expressed hope in finding a way to facilitate a smooth transition. Instagram spokesperson Christine Pai highlighted that community feedback would be crucial in determining any further rollout of the vertical grid format. Before the official announcement of this experiment, tipster Alessandro Paluzzi had already spotted vertical profile grids on Instagram in 2022. This initial observation hinted at the possibility of users being able to switch between a square grid and a 4:5 format for more flexibility in posting content. While the feature was initially tested with a small group of users last year, it now appears to be expanding to a larger audience. Despite reports from users about seeing the new profile grid format, the availability of the feature could not be confirmed by Gadget 360 staff members.
