The Troubles of Cities: Skylines 2 and the Missteps of the Beach Properties DLC

Cities: Skylines 2 has been facing backlash from players due to the recent release of the Beach Properties DLC. The joint statement issued by developers Colossal Order and publishers Paradox Interactive apologized to fans for the state in which the DLC was launched. The letter, signed by Colossal Order CEO Mariina Hallikainen and Paradox Interactive deputy CEO Mattias Lilja, not only acknowledged the disappointment expressed by players but also promised refunds for those who purchased the DLC. In addition, players who acquired the DLC through Skylines 2’s Edition will receive compensation in the form of three Creator Packs and three radio stations. Furthermore, the contentious DLC is being offered for free to those who have not yet purchased it.

Beach Properties was intended to be a significant DLC release for Cities: Skylines 2, marking a turning point for the game. However, the DLC faced criticism for its lack of and scope. Priced at £8.49 / $10, the DLC was primarily an asset pack rather than a true expansion, offering only a few new buildings and plantable foliage. Surprisingly, none of the new content resembled actual beach properties, disappointing many players. The release of mod tools alongside the DLC was meant to appease players, but these tools were also found to be lacking in functionality, particularly the ability to import new assets.

In response to the backlash, the joint statement between Colossal Order and Paradox Interactive pledged to make immediate and meaningful changes in the game’s development and communication with players. The focus will now be on improving the base game and modding tools, with the previously planned Bridges and Ports expansion being delayed until 2025. Additionally, an “advisory meeting” is being organized to allow select Cities enthusiasts to provide feedback and discuss improvements with the developers.

Despite the efforts to address the issues surrounding Cities: Skylines 2 and the Beach Properties DLC, some players remain skeptical about the promised improvements. Past commitments to enhance the game’s performance have fallen short, and the recent misstep with the DLC has shaken the trust of many players. While there may be hope for Skylines 2’s , it remains to be seen whether the developers can deliver on their promises and regain the confidence of the player base. In the meantime, players who were disappointed by the underwhelming DLC are encouraged to consult Paradox’s FAQ for information on obtaining a refund.
